Display

Samsung accentuates on the newly developed displays for the 10th anniversary of its Galaxy S series of smartphones and this is quite understandable. The manufacturer has created an entirely new type of OLED displays, which it calls Dynamic AMOLED. These are brighter than the panels used on the S8 and S9 with a manufacturer-stated peak brightness of 1200 nits. Our guess is that this luminance is achieved at very low APL and in high-ambient-brightness conditions. The Galaxy S10 screen has a 6.1-inch diagonal size and a WQHD+ resolution (1440 x 3040 pixels), 550 ppi pixel density, 19:9 aspect ratio. The device ships with the default resolution set to FHD+ and this can be changed to WQHD+ from the Settings. Always-On Display and VR headset support are provided.

The display is HDR10+ certified. This standard has been initially created by Samsung and later backed by Panasonic, Philips, Amazon, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox. Unlike the HDR10 standard which has static metadata, the HDR10+ has dynamic metadata, like Dolby Vision. This means that each scene is HDR fine-tuned all the way from the start until the end using Dynamic Tone Mapping. Currently HDR10+ content is available only from Amazon Prime Video. In addition, a unique fluid composite in the display reduces harmful blue light without changing the colour of the displayed content.

As long as it concerns display management, there are noticeable changes with the new UI. You now only have two colour profile options down from four on the previous model. The default one is called Natural and is perfectly calibrated for sRGB. The second mode is dubbed Vivid and it offers a significantly wide colour space coverage without specifying whether it is for DCI-P3, Adobe RGB, etc. It allows you to manually adjust the colour temperature in general or for each of the colours green, red, and blue.

The APL graph above shows the brightness of the display at different APL levels with the adaptive toggle switched off and in normal ambient light conditions. It clearly shows that the display maintains relatively one and the same level of brightness no matter the percentage of white displayed on the screen. More specifically, in this case, the white luminance varies only a little - from 373.256 cd/m2 at 10% APL to 384.564 cd/m2 at 100% APL. The measurements are made with the default Natural mode on. They are comparable to the levels of white luminance on the display of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9.

The Dynamic AMOLED displays on the S10 and S10+ are the first to offer a dynamic change of the brightness depending on the ambient light conditions even when the adaptive toggle is switched off. Hence, we've made two APL graphs - one with the adaptive toggle switched off and the second - when switched on. The measurements for both graphs are made in high ambient light conditions. The graph unequivocally demonstrates that the white luminance from both measurements is identical at the different APL levels. The peak white luminance level we've got from the S10 display is 1011.892 cd/m2 - this is the highest peak brightness we've measured at 10% APL from all smartphones we've tested. The measurements are made with the default Natural mode on. With these readings, currently the Galaxy S10 and S10+ do not have a real competitor on the market in terms of peak brightness. In practice, all this means that on a bright and sunny day, you will be able to enjoy any type of content on your S10 without any effort. The display quickly adjusts its brightness according to the ambient light conditions, even if the adaptive toggle is switched off. At the same time, it refrains reflections making the content very easily readable.

The display panel features Samsung's Pentile Diamond Pixels sub-pixel arrangement, which has several distinctive features. The blue and the red sub-pixels have a diamond shape and both are quite large, with the blue ones being slightly larger. On the other hand, the green sub-pixels are visibly smaller and oval. Respectively, the number of the blue and red sub-pixels is almost twice as small as the number of the green sub-pixels - 403 sub-pixels per inch for the blue and red against 570 sub-pixels per inch for the green. Natural mode

The Natural is deliberately calibrated to cover 100% of the sRGB / Rec.709 colour space, which in terms of everyday use you find on most web content, non-professional photos and videos, computer content, etc. The colour temperature under this mode is in the perfect range of 6500-7000 K.

Vivid mode

The Vivid mode definitely covers a larger colour space but Samsung does not specify the exact percentage and colour space standard. The CIE diagram shows it is higher than 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space. Colours are significantly punchier. The colour temperature with this mode on is slightly higher compared to the one with the Natural mode on and varies from 7000 K to 7500 K.
