Rear cameras, photo and video samples

As a result of Xiaomi's close relationship with Samsung in regards to its image sensors, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the first commercially available mobile with a 64MP image sensor, namely - the Samsung S5KGW1. This sensor has a 1/1.72" optical format and 0.8 μm native pixel size. However, due to Samsung's Tetracell technology, the pixel size increases to 1.6 μm. How does it work? Unlike conventional RGB sensors, pixels with the same colour filter are placed next to one another in groups of four in an image sensor with Tetracell technology. When the camera is shooting in low-light conditions, the algorithm combines information and data from each group, essentially transforming four smaller pixels into a larger pixel. In bright lighting conditions, the re-mosaic algorithm remaps the pixels into a conventional RGB pattern through an algorithm called re-mosaic algorithm to produce high-resolution photos.

The original resolution of the photos is 9248 x 6936 but in fact, the smartphone shoots by default 16MP photos (4624 x 3472). In order to shoot in the native resolution, you have to choose the 64MP shooting mode or the corresponding setting from the Pro Mode. On the Redmi Note 8 Pro, this sensor is combined with a 6-element lens with a 79° angle of view and an f/1.7 aperture. It is aided by a dual-LED flash, Super Phase Detection AF, and contrast AF. As long as it concerns video, this camera can shoot 1080p videos at 60 fps, 4K videos at 30 fps, 720p videos at 960 fps (slow motion), short and time-lapse videos.

In addition to the main 64MP camera, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has three more rear cameras. There's an 8MP ultra-wide shooter with a 1/4" image sensor, 1.12 μm pixels size and 120° angle of view. It has an f/2.2 aperture and 13 mm focal length (35 mm equivalent). The 2MP depth-sensing unit uses a 1/5" sensor with 1.75 μm pixel size and an f/2.4 aperture. Finally, there's the 2MP macro camera - the unit placed below the dual-LED flash. It has a 1/5" sensor with 1.75 μm pixel size and an f/2.4 aperture. With it, you can shoot from as close as 2 cm.

Front camera, photo samples

The front camera of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is equipped with a 20MP Samsung S5K3T1 image sensor. Xiaomi has used the same sensor for the front cameras of many of its devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, Pocophone F1, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition. Nokia X7 is yet another smartphone that uses this sensor for its selfie camera. This sensor has a 1/3.1" optical format and a 0.9 μm pixel size. The front camera has an f/2.0 aperture and shoots photos with a resolution of 5184 x 3880 and 1080p videos at 30 fps. It supports face unlock.

Camera app

The Camera app is the usual MIUI one but customized according to the camera specifics of the model. As usual, the main screen of the app has a circular shutter button at the bottom's centre with a shortcut to the list of photos and videos to its left and the camera switch to its right. Above those buttons, you will see the list of shooting modes - Photo, 64MP, Portrait, Video, Short Video, Night, Panorama, Pro. The top of the screen contains the flash and HDR options, AI on/off and Macro on/off buttons, Beauty mode with a beauty-effect slider and a large choice of filters. If you click on the hamburger menu in the top right corner, you also get additional shooting options - straighten, tilt-shift, timer, camera frame and a shortcut to the camera settings. These additional options change depending on the shooting mode that's active at the moment. When you're shooting videos, you can choose the resolution and fps from the corresponding option on the top of the screen.

By default, the smartphone takes 16MP photos with the main camera. This corresponds to the 1x zoom level. If you want to snap 64MP shots, you either go to the 64MP mode or choose the corresponding option from the Pro Mode. If you want to take photos with the ultra-wide camera, simply click the 0.6 zoom level or choose this type of camera from the Pro Mode. If you want to take macro shots, then tap on the macro icon on the top of the screen or choose the macro camera from the Pro Mode. The 2x zoom level actually uses the main camera. It takes a normal photo, digitally zooms it in and crops it. There's no optical zoom on this smartphone. The Portrait mode supports studio lights effects and beautification. The Night Mode was introduced with the launch of the Mi MIX 3 and, of course, has found its way on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. For this mode, the main camera is used. The Pro mode allows you to adjust the white balance, f-number, ISO, and shutter speed as well as choose the camera with which you want to shoot.
The interface for the front camera is almost entirely identical to the one for the rear cameras. Whenever you choose a mode that's not supported by the front shooters (the Night mode, for example), the device simply switches to the rear cameras. The Camera settings are one and the same for the front and rear cameras and include toggles for camera sounds, location info saving, save the previous mode, add a time stamp on photos, device watermark, show grid lines, focus and shoot, scan QR codes, save original photos as well. You can also set the camera frame and picture quality. When shooting videos, the settings allow you to set the resolution and fps, the video encoder, time-lapse interval. The rest of the video recording options are the same as for the photo shooting ones.
