Display

OnePlus 7 Pro is equipped with a 6.67-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a QHD+ resolution (1440 x 3120) and 3D curved Gorilla Glass 5 for protection. Of course, the display panel is supplied by Samsung but there's no data whether this panel is the same as the one used on the Galaxy S10 series. It has a Diamond PenTile sub-pixel arrangement. In this type of sub-pixel architecture, the number of green subpixels (small and elongated) is the same as in a classic RGB stripe one, but the number of red subpixels (mid-size and diamond-shaped) and blue subpixels (large and diamond-shaped) is twice as less. Hence, the panel uses subpixel rendering to preserve the number of pixels as in classic RGB stripe displays with only 2/3rds of the number of dots.

The display on this smartphone is one of the few in the industry at present to support a higher refresh rate - 90Hz, to be exact. This results in a more fluent experience with transitions between screens, smoother scrolling and swiping, etc. The screen supports HDR10/HDR10+ content and, for this, high brightness levels are a must. During the official announcement event, OnePlus stated that the 7 Pro has 800 nits of brightness. We expect this to be the peak not the typical brightness of the display and is most probably achieved at very low APL % - around 5% or less.

An OTA update received immediately after the release of OnePlus 7 Pro brings DC dimming to the model. It allows Night Mode 2.0 to achieve really low brightness levels with the minimum white luminance reaching 0.27 cd/m2 at the warmest and darkest setting. Without DC dimming and with Night Mode on, the lowest white luminance at 100% APL is 0.382 cd/m2. When Night Mode is on, the Screen calibration menu is disabled. In addition to decreasing the brightness, DC dimming also decreases the colour temperature - from 3631 K without it to 3234 K with it on.

From the Display settings, you can also activate and set up the Reading Mode to achieve a more paper-like reading experience. You can schedule the mode and can associate apps to it so that the Reading Mode is automatically activated when you start these apps. An embedded Blue Light Filter ensures your eyes are protected even if you're not using Night or Reading Mode. Actually, Samsung AMOLED panels have a VDE (Verband der Elektrotechnik) certificate that they are safe for your eyes. The Ambient Display feature is unchanged. Still no always-on-display (AOD) from OnePlus for AMOLED displays.

OnePlus 7 Pro also offers a large choice of colour modes to suit your preferences - Vivid, Natural and Advanced - AMOLED Wide Gamut, sRGB, Display P3. Under the last three modes, you can also set the colour temperature manually. These can be found in Settings >> Display >> Screen calibration. When you set up the device for the first time, it asks you to choose the screen calibration mode. Below you can see our measurements of the white luminance from 10% to 100% APL for all five modes. This unveils the peak brightness of the display. The adaptive brightness mode is on. In normal light conditions, the white luminance is lower than the one in high ambient light conditions in any mode.

The graph above combines the results of measuring the peak brightness at different APL % from all five colour modes. The highest brightness levels are achieved via the Vivid mode, the lowest ones - via the Natural mode. The three modes combined in the Advanced mode group offer similar brightness levels. Natural mode - peak brightness, colour temperature, colour space coverage

The peak brightness of the display on our review unit under the Natural mode is 586.136 cd/m2 at 10% APL. At 100% APL, the white luminance measures 562.202 cd/m2. This mode seems to offer the lowest white luminance levels of all five modes. The colour temperature remains stable at all brightness levels at an excellent level of around 6800 K. It seems that the Natural mode is deliberately calibrated to cover 100% of the sRGB / Rec.709 colour space, which in terms of everyday use you find on most web content, non-professional photos and videos, computer content, etc. In terms of sRGB colour space coverage, it is better than the dedicated sRGB mode.

Vivid mode - peak brightness, colour temperature, colour space coverage

When the Vivid mode is on, the display achieves its highest brightness levels. At 10% APL, the white luminance measures 740.527 cd/m2 and at 100% APL, it measures 577.248 cd/m2. The temperature of the white point is stable at all brightness levels - around 7200 K. The display does look a bit colder and a lot brighter with this mode. However, this display still can't beat the Samsung displays from the Galaxy S8, S9 and S10 series when it comes to outdoor visibility. Unfortunately, outdoors the OnePlus 7 Pro screen is not as bright as the competition. In terms, of colour space coverage - with the Vivid mode one, the colours look punchier and the gamut coverage is just below 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space.

AMOLED Wide Gamut mode - peak brightness, colour temperature, colour space coverage

The AMOLED Wide Gamut mode offers a peak brightness at 10% APL of 731.873 cd/m2. At 100% APL, the white luminance measures 564.601 cd/m2. With this mode on, the display is slightly less bright compared to the Vivid mode. The colours look colder as the temperature of the white point is around 8000 K. This mode also offers the highest colour space coverage of all five available modes.

sRGB mode - peak brightness, colour temperature, colour space coverage

The peak brightness under this mode is not very different from that for the AMOLED Wide Gamut mode - 729.307 cd/m2 at 10% APL. The white luminance at 100% APL measures 563.577 cd/m2. The temperature of the white point is also the same - around 8000 K. The sRGB colour mode should be deliberately calibrated to cover 100% of the sRGB colour space but it doesn't. It covers less than 100% of that gamut and the ΔE values for the primary colours are as follows: ΔE=2.6 for blue, ΔE=2.2 for green, ΔE=2.1 for cyan, ΔE=4.6 for red, ΔE=6.6 for yellow and ΔE=7.6 for magenta. Again, the Natural mode offers a more precise colour calibration. Older OnePlus models which we have tested have a much more accurate sRGB calibration.

Display P3 mode - peak brightness, colour temperature, colour space coverage

The Display P3 mode offers almost the same white luminance levels as the previous two modes. At 10% APL, the white luminance measures 730.231 cd/m2 and at 100% APL it measures 563.008 cd/m2. The temperature of the white point is also the same - around 8000 K. In terms of colour space coverage, the Display P3 mode covers a slightly larger space than the Vivid mode and slightly smaller space than the AMOLED Wide Gamut mode.
