Rear cameras

OnePlus 7 Pro has three rear cameras. The main one is equipped with a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. It has a large 1/2" format and a small pixel size - 0.8 μm, to fit all these pixels onto its surface. The sensor's most hyped feature is the Quad Bayer colour filter array in which every 2x2 pixel array has the same colour filter. Thus, depending on the conditions, it can process data in different ways. In low-light conditions, for example, the data from four adjacent pixels is processed as data from a single one. Hence, the resulting photos are with a resolution of 12MP.

There's no option to change the photo resolution. When shooting in native 48MP resolution, the photos have a resolution of 8000 x 6000 pixels. By default, the main rear camera of OnePlus 7 Pro shoots in 12MP (4000 x 3000). You have to go to the Pro mode, click on the JPG icon and select from there 48MP shooting to get photos in their native resolution. The sensor is paired to a 7-element lens with an f/1.6 aperture. The camera is optically stabilized for photos, has EIS for videos and shoots 4K videos at 60 fps, 1080p ones at 240 fps, 1080p time-lapse videos. Shooting 4K videos at 60 fps does not use EIS but videos look quite sharp because they are shot in real 4K resolution. At the same time, 4K videos at 30 fps use EIS but it is clearly visible that they are cropped and look interpolated (less sharp and with less definition compared to 4K videos at 60 fps). We suppose that the camera records 4K video at 30 fps with the same angle of view and detail as the 4K video at 60 fps. However, only a cropped part of it is taken, interpolated to 4K and made available as a 4K video at 30 fps, which leads to a narrower viewing angle, loss in detail and sharpness. This allows the information above, below and from the sides of the cropped frame to be used by the EIS algorithms to compensate various unwanted hand movements. Other smartphones that use the same 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor and have been reviewed by us include: UMIDIGI S3 Pro, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 9.

The second rear camera is a 16MP unit with unknown sensor model and a 117° ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture. The third camera is an 8MP telephoto one. Again, the sensor remains unknown but the lens has an f/2.2 aperture. This camera is aided by OIS as well. Laser AF (LAF), contrast AF (CAF), phase-detection AF (PDAF) and a dual-LED flash are also provided.

Sony IMX586 comparison (100% crop)

Here you can check four 100% crops from photos made with the 48MP Sony IMX586 on four different smartphones we've recently reviewed, including the OnePlus 7 Pro. It's a convenient way to compare image quality and image post-processing. Our personal opinion is that the current status of optics in smartphones is not good enough to satisfy the needs of large resolution image sensors. Hence, heavy post-processing is involved to compensate for the lack of optical resolution. Having a quality image sensor alone is not enough to make quality photos, it always has to go with matching optics.

Sony IMX586 comparison

Front camera

The front-facing camera is housed in a pop-up unit that uses a stepper motor mechanism to go out and back in. It pops up in 0.63 seconds, according to OnePlus, and is rated for 300,000 uses. The manufacturer also demonstrated how the module can hold a 22 kg piece of concrete and still remain intact. If you press the module to go back in, it will do so gently and the device will display a message warning you to refrain from such actions. If the device falls, it senses that and automatically retracts the camera.

The selfie camera is equipped with a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor with 1.0 μm pixel size and an f/2.0 lens. It takes photos with a resolution of 4608 x 3456 pixels and shoots 1080p videos at 30 fps. The camera is aided by EIS and screen flash for better selfies in poorly lit environments. It supports face unlock, which is quite fast having in mind that the shooter has to pop up and go back in.

Camera App

The Camera app on OnePlus 7 Pro looks quite familiar. It builds upon the latest one installed on OnePlus 6T by adding various features related to the fact that you can shoot with each of the three cameras on the back. This feature is in the form of small icons depicting 3 (wide), 2 (regular) and 1 (telephoto) figures. When you select a corresponding camera, the zoom level appears in a circle and is 0.6x for the wide, 1x for the regular and 3x for the telephoto camera.

The various shooting modes appear on a reel above the shutter button. A swipe up from the button opens the full list of modes and from the settings, you can add/remove modes from the reel. The default one is Photo and you can set a timer, change the aspect ratio and flash behaviour. However, the photo resolution is locked and there are no options to change it. The main camera takes 12MP photos by default and you have to visit the Pro mode and click the JPG icon in order to get options for 48MP and RAW shooting. HDR options are lacking as well. This feature steps in automatically, when the camera decides so. You can adjust and lock the exposure. In addition, the smartphone suggests which camera and/or which mode to choose whenever it decides you're not using the right ones.
When shooting video, you can choose from 1080p at 30 fps and 60 fps as well as 4K at 30 fps and 60 fps. That's for the 48MP camera. Shooting videos with the wide snapper is not possible. The flash is also disabled for this camera for both photo and video shooting. The Portrait mode has a beautification feature, which can only be switch on/off. There's no option to adjust the level of beautification and real-life photos seem to be overly beautified. Of course, you can switch it off entirely. The Portrait mode uses the 3x telephoto camera and you have to maintain a distance from your subject of 0.5 to 2 metres. The Nightscape mode is created to shoot in low light conditions. It uses the 48MP camera and makes a number of photos that it combines in a single resulting image. We must say there's lots of room for improvement in terms of dynamic range, colour reproduction and detail.

The Pro mode allows you to manually adjust the ISO, white balance, focus type, exposure, shutter speed. It adds a horizon line and a histogram. You also get a timer, a choice of aspect ratios and you can also create two profiles with pre-set features. As we said above, the JPG icon allows you to switch to shooting 48MP photos and RAW files. The Timelapse option allows you to make 720p and 1080p videos. There's a Panorama mode as well as a Slow Motion one that makes 1080p videos at 240 fps and 720p videos at 480 fps.
The Camera Settings are extremely simplified. From this menu, you can choose which modes to appear on the reel and which not. There are toggles for the lens correction of the ultra-wide camera, manual HDR control, smart content detection, location data storing, shutter sound, quick capture. You can also choose to show/hide a grid and a watermark on the photos. For the Pro mode, you can switch on/off the histogram and horizon line. For shooting selfies you can enable/disable the mirrored photo function and that's all about the camera settings menu.

The front facing camera interface is the same. It supports Photo, Portrait, Video, and Time Lapse. Whenever you choose any other mode, the device switches to the rear cameras. Another difference with the rear cameras here is that when you select the beautification options in Photo and Portrait, you actually get to choose the level of beautification.

As long as it concerns photo editing, the Gallery app allows you to add filters, various types of marks and adjust the crop, rotation, exposure, contrast, saturation, warmth, highlights, shadows. As of the time of this review, there's no Google Lens integrated. OnePlus 6T had it.
