OS, UI and software

Ulefone Armor 21 runs on Android 13 with some customization on behalf of Ulefone but the almost-stock feeling is preserved. The Lock Screen is based on periodically interchanging wallpapers with a Time and Date widget on the top of the screen and a shortcut at the bottom right corner, which opens a second Lock Screen with four quick access options - sound recorder, torch, calculator, and alarm clock. There's also a Lock Screen wallpaper for when you plug in the device to charge its battery. The Home Screen is classic with a default wallpaper that directly refers to the design of the 122 dB speaker of the model. In addition to the classic elements you'd find on any Android 13 Home Screen, Ulefone has also included there the Remote Control app and the Service Center app.
Desktop shortcuts are supported and Ulefone has added a beautiful background blur when the dialog comes up on the screen. The overall UI theme color is beige with pastel yellow. By default, App Drawer is activated and you can see the apps listed in alphabetic order with a list of the most used ones on top below the app search bar. From the Widgets menu, you can access the Home settings and change the desktop mode to access the apps on successive desktops to the right of the Home Screen. The Widgets menu also allows you to change the screen transition effect, edit widgets, and change the wallpapers. The Google Discover app is accessed after a swipe to the right from the Home Screen. The Notifications have a classic design and layout and so do the Quick Settings toggles which are listed on two pages.
Ulefone Armor 21 has a standard set of pre-installed applications found on almost every modern rugged smartphone we've reviewed. The Google applications include the Assistant, Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Files, Find Device, Gmail, Discover, Keep Notes, Lens, Maps, Meet, Play Store, Photos, YouTube, and YT Music. The standard Android apps comprise the Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, FM Radio, Messenger, Phone, and Sound Recorder. Safety is a Google app that is now gradually finding its place in the standard set of apps.
The additional ones include Children Space, Easy Launcer, Funny Sounds, Game Booster, Outdoor Tools, Theme, and Service Center. There's also a Mobile Guardian which is simply a different name for the System Manager app that contains tools for power management, app lock, notification settings, cache clearing, and system speeding up. There's a toolbox there as well that allows you to clean redundant audio files, photos, videos, apps, and other unnecessary files. Finally, the built-in IR blaster turns the device into a convenient remote control for home appliances and media devices, so there's a dedicated app for that.
The Settings app has a layout that's typical for older Android versions as the different menus are grouped visually. Each group lists the menus on white rectangulars with rounded corners that pop up from the general light gray background. Of course, the first group is about connectivity. It lists on the first access level the Wi-Fi settings, Connected devices, Android Auto, SIM cards, Mobile network, Hotspot & Tethering, and additional network and connection settings. The second logical group is about managing main device properties. The first is the Display allowing to adjust the brightness, night light, lock screen options, the LED notification lights, screen refresh rate, color mode and other display properties. The second menu in this group is about personalization and wallpapers.
The third is about the Infinite Halo from where you can activate it for music and notifications. For each, you can adjust the halo mode and the LEDs brightness level. You have the opportunity to customize the start and end times or simply switch on the DND mode. The Navigation Bar is fourth in the second group with customization for the on-screen gestures and the virtual navigation bar. The Sound & Vibration settings come fifth and include all the standard options plus Live Caption settings, BesLoudness, and Hi-Fi Mode enhancements. The last two menus are Apps and Notifications, which are quite standard.
The third group is also quite logical and related to privacy and security. The first menu is Privacy with all the standard menus such as dashboard, permission manager, Android System Intelligence, autofill service, and others. It is followed by the Security menu with all four security branches on top, app lock, children's space, and biometrics. Finally, there's the Safety & Emergency menu that relates to the Safety app and Wireless emergency alerts, allowing you to add medical information, emergency contacts, set up your emergency SOS, crisis alert settings, etc.
The fifth group contains settings for the physical customizable key, location settings, battery management, the Smart Touch tool - that's the on-screen floating dot that provides yet another tool for navigation. There's a list of Special Functions in this group and includes the options for the virtual RAM expansion, additional fingerprint functions, app cloning, smart answer, flip to silent, sensor calibration, gloves mode for the screen, double-tap to wake up, and others.
There's a sixth group that includes the Passwords & Accounts menu, System, and About phone. The last group contains the standard Digital Wellbeing menu, Google settings, and DuraSpeed.
