Ulefone Armor 6E Review
You can buy an Ulefone Armor 6E at a promotional price from Amazon UK, Ulefone's official store on AliExpress, GearBest or Banggood.

OS, UI and software

If there’s a major difference between the Armor 6E and the Armor 6, this is the software. The 6E runs on Android 9 Pie, while the Armor 6 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo. Still, this difference remains below the surface as the experience from both smartphones is quite similar. On most occasions, visually there are no differences between the two versions of the operating system. Both have Ulefone's slight overlay on top still offering a near-stock Android experience. The Lock screen has the usual Volume and Camera shortcuts in the bottom left and right corners and swiping is the default way to unlock. Despite the wallpapers, the Home Screen layout is identical to the one on the Armor 6. Swiping to the right leads to the second desktop where the rest of the apps are listed and swiping to the right from the Home Screen opens the Google App with suggested daily news, which you can customize.

The Notifications are stock Android 9 Pie ones in terms of design and functionality but the Quick Settings shade has been re-designed a bit - darker background, different icon colours and positioning - 15 toggles per page. The Task Manager tiles the applications vertically just like in Android Oreo and supports split-screen mode. It also contains a White List from where you can protect the apps you need to continue working on the background. And here are some more differences with the previous versions. Desktop shortcuts are supported and the Widgets menu does not offer this extensive level of customization as the one on the Armor 6. You get the simple three-option pop menu for managing the widgets, wallpapers and home screen settings. The latter contains only two toggles - for the Google App and notification dots. The Volume and Power menus are also with Android Pie’s design.
Ulefone Armor 6E arrives with a standard set of Google and default Android apps but also some additional ones that might be useful when travelling or conquering the great outdoors. The usual Google apps include Chrome, Drive, Duo, Gmail, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, Voice Search, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calendar, Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, FM Radio, Messenger, Phone, Sound Recorder. Unlike in Armor 6, all are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. The additional apps include a Translator which supports both text and voice input, a Game Mode from where you can manage the smartphone's behaviour during gameplay and a ToolBag a compass, sound meter, barometer, pedometer, level, magnifier, height measurer, protractor. The UV sensor icon shows the current UV level with a diagram. If the UV levels reach a certain level, the device will issue a warning. A new app here is the Child Mode. It allows you to set the duration of the session, to allow or not mobile data and limit its quantity, as well as choose which apps should be visible and accessible under this mode. Another new app is the Notes one, which is quite simple. The Alerts app shows any alerts for threats in your area being it floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.
The Settings menu of the Armor 6E looks a lot like the on the Armor 6, however, it has some icons redesigned and is restructured a bit. There's a search field on the top of the list of settings which begins with the two groups that manage the connectivity options of the model. The first is for the wireless and mobile connections: Wi-Fi preferences, hotspot and tethering, Wi-Fi Direct, mobile data usage, SIM cards, VPN, etc. The second group manages the model’s connections to other devices via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Display, NFC, USB connections, printing services. The third group of options allows you to manage the apps and notifications, including app permissions, default apps, special app access, notification dots, lock screen notifications, etc. It is followed by the Battery settings which are discussed in the corresponding part of this review. The Display menu is fourth and offers plenty of options, including the MiraVision settings for optimizing the display in all aspects, which was more common in Android 7 Nougat. From here you can manage the .brightness level, display and font size, screen saver, switch on/off the adaptive brightness, wallpapers, screen sleep and auto-rotate. This group also contains Night Light settings for more comfortable viewing in dark environments, LED notification light and Navigation Bar options. On Ulefone Armor 6E you cannot hide the notch while such an option is present on the Armor 6.
The Sound group of settings is fifth and contains the standard set of options: three volume toggles, a choice of ringtones, DND preferences, vibration settings, additional sounds. It is followed by the Storage menu with options to free up space and enable the storage manager. The Security & Location group of settings comes next and contains the standard set of options beginning with Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security update. Then, it continues with the screen lock settings, Lock Screen preferences, fingerprint IDs management, Smart Lock settings, privacy and data protection options. The fingerprint menu allows you to store and delete fingerprint ID(s) as well as assign an app shortcut to a fingerprint ID of choice. The Face Unlock follows for storing, deleting and managing your face ID used for unlocking the smartphone when the screen is on. It is succeeded by the Accounts and Accessibility menus which are in their stock design and functionality. They are followed by the Gesture WakeUp menu which allows you to activate toggles for various gestures. For example, if you write a C on the display with your finger, even when the screen is off, this will open the Phone app.

The ScanCode is simply a QR Code scanner that uses the rear camera. This menu is followed by a second Fingerprint one which allows you to assign a certain function to a tap or a long-touch on the fingerprint sensor even if a fingerprint ID has not been saved. The Gesture Motion group of options includes the telephony motion (answer calls by a swing, smart switch), system motion (three-point screenshot, three-point camera entry, two-point volume adjustment, double tap to lock, turn to snooze alarm), and smart somatosensory (launcher, camera, gallery, SMS somatosensory dial, unlock). The Google group of settings is the usual one you're familiar with. The SOS Call menu comes next and allows you to activate an SOS function which automatically activates a call and sens SMS when the screen is off, you can edit the SOS message, include a flashlight or not, set emergency contacts, emergency message, etc. The DuraSpeed feature is next and is on by default. As you already know, this feature boosts the foreground apps, while limiting background ones. Of course, the last group of settings is the System one. From here, you can set up your language and keyboard preferences, including the Autofill service, activate the Jump to Camera toggle from the Gestures sub-menu, backup your data, reset the device, set the time and date, check the About phone data.
