UMIDIGI S3 Pro Review

Display

UMIDIGI S3 Pro uses the same display found on the UMIDIGI F1. This is a 6.3-inch in-cell LTPS unit with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It is protected by a 2.5D curved glass of unknown manufacturer. In-cell means that the touch sensor layer is implemented inside the cell of the liquid crystal display (LCD) thus making the unit thinner, more responsive, less power consuming and brighter. LTPS (Low-Temperature PolySilicon) panels are strongly adopted by smartphones with large displays and large resolutions mainly due to their higher carrier mobility (compared to amorphous-silicon panels) that makes them thinner, brighter, and power efficient.

The Display settings include a lot of options for tweaking the screen to your liking, including MediaTek's MiraVision software. With it, you can set a colour profile, adjust the saturation, contrast, dynamic contrast, sharpness, etc. You can manually adjust the brightness level, switch on/off the adaptive brightness toggle as well as use the Night Mode whenever you need to spend more on-screen time, so it can protect your eyes.

Below you will find our measurements of the white and black luminance, static contrast ratio and colour temperature of the display. The measurements are taken in two different ways. The Single Frame ones show the white and black luminance of a screen that shows 50% white and 50% black. These measurements should provide more realistic data about the actual contrast. The Separate Frames measurements show the white and black luminance of a fully white and fully black screen. In general, the brightness of the S3 Pro display strongly depends on the active area on the screen and changes in a non-linear manner that's especially pronounced after 70% of brightness level.

As usual, the white luminance measured on two separate black and white frames is higher than the one measured on one frame that shows 50% white and 50% black. In the first occasion, it is 503.914 cd/m2 and in the second - 400.444 cd/m2. Things reverse when we look at the black luminance - from the two separate frames measurement, we get almost twice lower values compared to the ones from the single frame with 50% white and 50% black. Logically, the two separate frames measurement shows a very high contrast ratio of 3700:1, while the single frame measurement shows a more realistic contrast ratio of 1500:1. The temperature of the white point is around 8200 K from the single frame and 8700 K from the two separate frames measurement. All in all, the screen on the S3 Pro is very close in terms of properties to the screens from the latest UMIDIGI smartphones we have tested.

The CIE diagram unveils colour space coverage that is slightly higher than 100% sRGB. Colours in the red-orange, the green-yellow and blue-purple spectrum might look slightly punchier than normal. This is also very typical for a display on a UMIDIGI smartphone. The display panel has a traditional vertical striped RGB subpixel arrangement.
