Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro Review

OS, UI and software

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro runs on MIUI 10.2 based on Android 9.0 Pie just like the Redmi Note 7. The user interface is a typical MIUI one. The Lock Screen contains a time/date widget, camera and settings shortcuts. Corresponding icons for charging and biometric unlock graphics appear when appropriate. The Wallpaper Carousel is off by default and you can set it up from the Lock Screen settings or from the settings shortcuts. The latter are accessed after a swipe to the right from the Lock Screen and include Mi Remote, Mi Wallet, Mi Home, Wallpaper Carousel and Torch.

The smartphone is unlocked after a swipe by default. On the Home Screen, the time moves to the top left corner in the status bar and the upper half of the screen provides weather data. The lower half directly lists the available apps and folders. There's a second desktop with apps and folders. The bottom of the desktops is occupied by a row of docked apps. A swipe to the right from the Home Screen opens the App Vault with shortcuts to preferred services, apps, features, information sources, notes, step counter, etc. You can customize it to your liking or completely switch it off from the home screen settings.
The App vault, Notification cards, Quick Settings, Brightness Level bar (which is a separate element), and the Volume controls reflect the new Android 9 design paradigms with curved corners. The notifications on MIUI do not support snoozing. Desktop shortcuts are not available as well. The Quick Settings toggles are listed on two pages. The Volume controls show the sliders vertically and have two levels of appearance - collapsed and expanded. The collapsed one shows only the slider for the current type of volume (media, alarms, calls) and a shortcut to the Silent mode. When you click on the three dots, you get the expanded view with all volume sliders and the two shortcuts to the Silent and DND modes.

As long as it concerns the Task Manager, MIUI goes the opposite way of vanilla Android. Previous MIUI versions tiled the apps horizontally and now that Android 9 tiles them the same way, MIUI 10 switched to vertical layout but a zig-zag one for improved comfort. For every app you get some or all of the following options: app lock, enter split screen mode and app info. The Task Manager has a shortcut to the split screen mode in the top left corner and a clear-all icon at the bottom. The Widgets menu is accessed in a familiar way and provides a choice of wallpapers and widgets, window transition effects and home screen settings. The latter can also be accessed from the main Settings menu. From here you can choose a default launcher, set the default desktop, fill the empty cells, lock the home screen layout, switch on/off the AppVault, etc.
Redmi Note 7 Pro arrives with all the usual applications you can find on the latest MIUI. The Phone app has two tabs - Recents and Contacts. There are a dial pad and an option to send a message. A separate Contacts app is available in the Tools folder as well. The Messenger remains unchanged maintaining its options for keyboard customization. The File Manager has been preserved as it was - with its three tabs - Recents (recently stored/opened files), Categories (files sorted in folders according to their type such as Docs, Videos, Images, Music, etc.), and Storage, which lists all files in their corresponding folders. It contains a shortcut to the Cleaner. The Clock and Calculator are located in the Tools folder and both have been updated to support Xiaomi's Mi AI assistant. The Sound Recorder and Screen recorder can be accessed from the Tools folder as well as the Compass and Level too, Mi Radio, QR Scanner, Downloads, Feedback, Mail, Mi Roaming, Mi Remote, and the Mi AI apps.
The rest of the basic apps also remain unchanged including the Weather, Notes, Calendar, Browser. It is worth mentioning that all pre-installed apps are regularly updated and supported by Xiaomi via the App Store application which is the Play Store alternative in MIUI. Of course, there's the Security app which in MIUI 10 has been re-designed but retained its main functionalities. It contains a Cleaner for optimizing the internal storage, Security Scanner, Game Speed Booster, App Manager, Data and Battery monitor. The Security app also contains various device management services such as app lock, deep clean, dual apps, second space, block list, etc. All of these are also available as options in the System Settings.
The usual Xiaomi apps, which are a part of the company's software ecosystem include a video, music, themes, games, reader app as well as Mi Home, Mi Shop, App Store, Mi Home, Mi Remote, Mi Wallet, etc. The Themes app allows you not only to download paid and free themes and wallpapers but also system fonts and ringtones. It also allows you to further customize the way the UI looks. The Mi Home app serves as a one-stop point for managing a network of smart devices at your home, which you can control from your mobile. For example, these might be a Xiaomi air purifier, air conditioner, TV set. The More folder contains applications that are created by third parties and are also bound to regular updates.
The System Settings offer the same architecture as seen on the past few MIUI versions. The menus are topped by a settings search bar followed by the My Device menu which lists data about the software version of the model, its basic specs, model number, legal data, etc. The actual settings begin with the Wireless & Network group which manages the device's connectivity options, including Wi-Fi settings, Bluetooth, Hotspot and other wireless connections, SIM cards, data usage and mobile networks.

The Personal group of settings contains menus that manage the Display, Wallpapers, Themes and Sounds & Vibrations. The Display menu is extensive as usual and in addition to the standard brightness level bar, automatic brightness toggle, system font, text size, etc., it adds a reading mode that can be scheduled. Of course, there's the Contrast & Colors menu from where you can set up the display profile depending on the type of content you're viewing. The Sound & vibration menu contains the usual three volume bars, Silent mode toggle, ringtones, notifications and system sounds.
System & device is the largest group of settings and starts off with the Lock screen & password options. From here you can create and manage fingerprint IDs, face ID, fingerprint payments, set a screen lock and privacy protection password as well as set up your lock screen. The Notifications & status bar settings are second in this group. The toggles layout and toggle positions options are removed but you get an additional toggle for showing/hiding the notification icons in the status bar. The Home screen settings come third and are the same ones that you can access from the Widgets menu. They allow you to choose a default launcher, lock the home screen layout and others.

The Full-Screen Display menu was introduced in MIUI 9.6 version and is present ever since. It allows you to either use on-screen navigation bar or on-screen gestures and hide the virtual buttons. It also includes a list of apps that support the fullscreen mode. The MI AI voice assistant and MI AI Button menus come next followed by the Second space, Battery, Storage, Emergency SOS, MIUI Lab and Additional settings. The Lite Mode - a typical MIUI feature - for budget Xiaomi smartphones, is here as well. All these are already familiar to everyone who's been using MIUI. The Emergency SOS menu is the newest feature and lets you manage your emergency messages and contacts as well as set an emergency signal. It also contains Parental Control settings.
The Additional Settings menu is quite extensive on its own, even though it is listed as the last menu in the System & Device group of settings. From here you can set up the Date & time, Languages & input, Privacy, Enterprise mode. The Autofill service appears for the first time in MIUI 10. The Privacy settings allow you finer control over your data and include traditional Android features such as Google Play Protect, Find My Device and Security Update.

The Additional Settings menu also contains the Quick Ball settings, from where you can activate and customize a floating dot, which is yet another type of navigation. It is followed by Taplus - a word searcher which will show you all the results after a tap and hold on a word. The same functions with images. The Additional Settings group continues with the Button and gesture shortcuts menu, the LED notification light, One-handed mode, Headphone & audio effects, Accessibility and Printing settings. The last two menus are the Mi Mover and Backup & reset.

The rest of the System Settings group are quite simple. The Accounts group manages your Mi Account and any other accounts you might have. The App Settings group allows you to manage the system and installed apps, use the dual app's functionality, manage app permissions and lock. All those features are also available from the Security application. Finally, there are the Feedback and Mi Service menus.
