AGM X1 Review

Design, build and controls

AGM X1 does not look like a classic rugged smartphone and that's good. Its overall appearance is quite elegant and classic with gently rounded corners. Still, lots of the design elements are typical for rugged devices: visible screws on the back, rubber flaps for the SIM tray, USB port and 3.5 mm jack, protruding buttons, etc. The frame is made of titanium alloy to provide a stable structure. It is in the corresponding colour of the device (dark blue or black) and has front chamfered edges coupled with a silver-coloured metal rim placed tightly around the display casing. Its top edge is actually higher than the screen. Above and below the display itself, which is covered with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3, there are plastic areas with brown dots that imitate speaker grilles. They are slightly protruding. Thus, if you place your smartphone face down on a flat surface, the screen won't touch it at all. They also protect it from breaking, if you accidentally drop the phone. The back of the device is made of polycarbonate material with a somewhat rubbery feel. It has a rhomboid pattern and is attached to the frame with 10 metal screws, hence, the battery is non-removable. It has two vertical bumps on the left and right side, with the back plate sinking towards the centre. This actually provides a comfortable grip, even if you wear gloves. The body is IP68 certified. IP stands for ingress protection. The first digit shows the level of protection against solid particles. It goes from 0 to 6, the latter being the highest level of protection and meaning the device is dust-tight - it is completely protected against contact. The second digit shows the level of protection against liquids. Its range is from 0 (the lowest) to 9K (the highest). In this case, 8 means that the device can be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. With a width of 78.7 mm and height of 163.8 mm, AGM X1 is wider and taller than the average 5.5-inch smartphone. It is also thicker (11.88 mm) and heavier (210 g) than average devices with a display of that size and a 5400 mAh battery. However, while feeling a bit bulky, it does not feel heavy at all. It is obvious that the smartphone has been meticulously crafted, with attention to detail and no compromise in materials used. The build is, without a doubt, solid. The model is available in black and dark blue colours. We are reviewing a blue unit, which is quite stylish, in fact.
AGM X1 has a somewhat different than the usual layout of buttons. On the left-hand side, there are two separate buttons for volume up and down. On the right-hand side, the hybrid, dual-SIM tray is located and below it, the power button is placed. The three buttons protrude just enough to find them easier when it is dark, or if you're working with gloves. They are made of metal and have polished chamfered edges in silver - the same colour of the rim around the display. The tray can house a Nano-SIM and a Micro-SIM/microSD card. It is covered with a rubber flap and you don't need a pin to open it. Simply remove the flap and pull the tray out with your fingers. The same rubber flap covers the area on the bottom frame, which includes the micro-USB 2.0 port and the 3.5 mm jack. There's a special way to open it though. You have to first press the two ends of the flap and then press on its centre. The top frame is literally clean - no ports, holes, buttons, etc. On the front, above the display, you will see the light sensor, receiver, LED notification light, and front camera. Below the display, the hardware navigation bar is positioned. It consists of capacitive Menu and Back buttons, and a touch-sensitive and clickable home button. The latter has a built-in fingerprint sensor from Fingerprint Cards, which works even if your fingers are wet. The dotted plastic plate below the navigation bar has a microphone hole. On the back of the smartphone, centrally along the vertical, you will see the two rear camera modules. They are part of a triangular area, which corresponds to the triangular AGM logo placed below it. To the left of the second camera module is the dual-LED flash and to the right, there is a microphone hole. Towards the lower end there's another AGM logo, but this time it is rectangular in shape. Below it, the masked speaker is positioned with two relief dots on its sides, so if you place the device on its back on a flat surface, the sound from the speaker won't be that muffled.
