OS, UI and software

Cubot King Kong 3 runs on stock Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. We have information from Cubot that this is not the final software with which the device will be shipped and there should be a final version that should fix bugs and finalize some features. The usual shortcuts to the Voice Search and Camera apps appear on the bottom left and right corners of the Lock Screen. By default, unlocking happens with a swipe and you can always change the type of lock from the Security settings. The Home screen contains a Google search bar and Time/Date widget, both of which can be removed. There's a folder with Google's apps, Duo and Play Store. At the bottom, there's a docked row of apps containing the Phone, Contacts, Messenger and Chrome apps. Desktop shortcuts are supported. A swipe to the right opens the Google App screen, which you can customize to show the latest information on topics that are of interest to you, including current weather. When you swipe from the bottom up on the Home screen, you get access to the page that lists all apps in alphabetic order. A search bar is placed on top for convenient search among apps. When you install new applications, they will appear in this list as well as on screens successive to the home one. The Task Manager tiles the apps vertically. There's a Clear All button and split-screen mode is supported.
The Notifications cards support notification snoozing and channels. You can swipe a notification card to the right to see two icons. The first leads to the settings for the notification channel of the app. The other one sets a time period after which the notification will appear again. The Quick Settings shade displays the battery level and time in the top right corner, followed by the brightness level bar. Below it, the toggles are listed - 6 per page. Below the toggles, the current date appears together with the Quick settings editor and the shortcut to the System Settings. A long press on an empty space on the Home screen opens the Widgets menu which contains the usual Widgets, Wallpapers and Home screen settings. The latter contains three toggles - for the Google App, adding icons of new apps on the Home screen, and for allowing home screen rotation. You can also switch on and off the Notification dots. The Volume and Power off menus have a stock appearance.
Our review unit has the basic Google apps and the default Android ones. The usual Google applications include Calendar, Chrome, Drive, Duo, Gmail, Google App, Maps, Photos, Play Music, Play Store, Voice Search, YouTube. The default Android apps include Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, File Manager, FM Radio, Messenger, Music, Phone, Sound Recorder. All of them are in their stock Android appearance and functionality. The Cubot Battery Master is just another name for a stock Android feature called DuraSpeed. It boosts foreground apps by restricting background ones. There's a separate menu in the Settings about this feature as well. In addition, the device arrives with a compass app. All apps, function properly, except for two. The Radio does not detect stations. The Camera app crashes from time to time. The guys from Cubot have assured us that the final version of the device will have all this fixed.
The Settings menu is a stock Android 8.1 Oreo one. The first group of settings is called Network & Internet and covers Wi-Fi connections management, mobile networks, data usage, hotspot and tethering, SIM cards, mobile plans, VPN, airplane mode. The second group is about connectivity as well - Connected devices. It manages Bluetooth connections, NFC, USB ones, Chromebook connection and Printing services. Apps & Notifications is the third menu and begins with an expansive list of the recently used apps. All the rest in this group is the same, including app-specific information, options, and notifications management, app permissions, special app access, and emergency broadcasts. The Battery menu comes fourth and is described in the Battery section of this review. The Display menu is fifth and is as simple as possible. It contains options for manual adjustment of the brightness level, an adaptive brightness toggle, the usual display and font size, choice of wallpapers and screensavers, etc. The Sound menu comes next. It contains the usual options you're familiar with from before. The Storage menu is seventh and gives you an option for freeing space in addition to offering a toggle for a Storage Manager. The eighth menu is the Cubot Power Manager a.k.a DuraSpeed one. When activated, this feature boosts foreground apps, while limiting the performance of the background ones.
The next menu is called Security & Location. It starts with the typical Android Oreo security options: Google Play Protect, Find My Device, and Security update. The rest of the options are quite standard - a choice of screen locks, lock screen options, fingerprint settings, smart lock, privacy options such as location and show passwords, etc. In Oreo, the Users and Accounts menus are merged into one and this is the tenth menu, which also contains emergency data and contacts settings. The Accessibility menu comes next with all the standard options for visual, hearing and touch aid. The Google services and preferences are combined in one separate menu, which is the last but one. The last menu is called System and combines in one place the Languages & Input settings, Display available shortcuts, Date & Time, Backup, Reset, System update and About phone. The Languages section contains the new Oreo feature for remembering logins called Autofill. By default, it uses Google's services, but you can associate any other suitable app with it. The Display available shortcuts menu contains a "Jump to camera" toggle.
