Rear cameras

The Exynos 9820's advanced image signal processor (ISP) supports up to five sensors, including an IR sensor, to enable flexible multi-camera solutions. With an advanced design for greater photo quality and faster auto-focus, the Exynos 9820 offers best-in-class photography experience, which is further enhanced by the AI-capabilities of the NPU. The chipset's multi-format codec (MFC) supports encoding and decoding of 8K videos at 30 fps or 4K UHD videos at 150 fps with 10-bit HEVC(H.265), H.264, VP9. The Galaxy S10 is equipped with three rear cameras. The main one is placed in the middle and employs a 12MP SAK2L4 sensor with a 77° wide-angle lens with a dual aperture (f/1.5 - f/2.4). The sensor has a 1/2.55" optical format and a 1.4 μm pixel size. It is aided by dual OIS, Phase detection AF with Dual Pixel and supports object-tracking AF. The main camera shoots photos with a resolution of 4032 x 3024 pixels and the following types of videos: 4K UHD @ 60 fps, 4K UHD @ 30 fps, FHD @ 60 fps, FHD @ 30 fps, HD @ 30 fps, FHD Slow Motion videos at 240 fps, HD Super Slow-Motion videos at 480 fps or 960 fps, hyperlapse FHD videos. To the left of the main camera is the telephoto one. It employs a 13MP S5K3M3 ISOCELL sensor with a 1/3.4" optical format and 1.0 μm pixel size. It is paired to a 45° lens with an f/2.4 aperture and dual OIS. The telephoto camera snaps photos with a 12MP resolution (4032 x 3024). The new thing here is the third rear shooter which packs an ultra-wide lens - 123°, with an f/2.2 aperture. It is coupled with a 16MP S5K3P9 ISOCELL Bright sensor with a 1.0 μm pixel size and a 1/3.1" optical format. The ultra-wide camera takes 4608 x 3456 photos. Each of those three cameras can shoot independently and can take advantage of the High CRI LED flash.

Front camera

The front-facing camera is equipped with a 10MP Samsung S5K3J1 image sensor with a 1.22μm pixel size. It is coupled with an 80° wide-angle lens with f/1.9 aperture. The selfie camera takes photos with a resolution of 3648 x 2736 pixels and shoots 4K videos at 30 fps. It supports Auto HDR, AR Emoji, Wide selfies and improved bokeh effect on portraits. It is fair to note that the wide selfies are actually the real 10MP photos. If you choose to use the single-selfie option, the final photo will have a 6.5MP resolution as the camera crops the frame. The front camera also supports face recognition and unlock. Unlocking with a face ID is extremely fast and in order to streamline the process, you might want to turn on the "Lift to wake" feature so you don't have to switch on the display from the power button.

Camera App

The Camera application on the Galaxy S10 offers plenty of visual changes compared to the camera app on the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S9. For starters, the various shooting modes are not placed on the top of the screen but above the shutter button at the bottom. The Gallery shortcut is placed to the left of the shutter button and the camera switch is to its right. Above the shooting modes, there are three icons identifying the three rear cameras. To their right is the Scene Optimizer, which can be switch on and off by tapping its icon or from the toggle in the camera settings. This year the Scene Optimizer adds 10 more scenes to offer a total of 30 scenes that can be recognized and optimized accordingly. When the cameras detect you're in a very dim environment, the Scene Optimizer automatically switches on the Night Mode accompanied by the corresponding icon. Other intelligent camera features include Shot suggestions for improving the right frame positioning for your shot and Flaw Detection.

The shooting modes include Food, Panorama, Pro (ISO, white balance, focus, aperture, shutter speed, focus), Live focus with bokeh effect, Photo, Video, Super Slow-mo, Slow motion, Hyperlapse. On the top of the screen, you will see the camera settings icon accompanied by specific settings for each shooting modes - flash, self-timer, beautification, aspect ratio for photos, moving objects detection for the super slow-motion videos, Super steady mode for video shooting (available only for 1080p videos), etc. Above those options, the Bixby Vision and AR Emoji menus appear. AR Emoji is in the Basic mode when first created and follows your facial expressions. To have your AR Emoji follow your body movements, Mini Motion mode must be selected. AR Emoji movements do not include hand gestures. For best results when using the Mini Motion mode, include the full body in the frame. AR Emoji may only be sent with apps supporting GIF format.
The Camera Settings for the rear and front shooters are listed in one place. They include the three intelligent features mentioned above and listed here as toggles, which you can turn on/off - Scene Optimizer, Shot Suggestions and Flaw Detection. You can also activate the Motion photos toggle for recording a short clip of what happened before the photo. You can also set what happens after a tap and hold on to the shutter button. There are several options for saving photos as well - HEIF images, RAW, pictures as previewed, ultra-wide shape correction, and selfie shape correction. and include the photo and video resolution for both, timer, HDR settings, grid lines, video stabilisation, shooting methods, face shape corrections, location tags, edit camera modes, motion photo, voice control, etc. You can also choose the aspect ratio and resolution for the videos shot with the rear and front cameras. The S10 offers options for recording HEVC and HDR10+ videos. HDR10+ recording is currently in beta and only available on the rear camera. Quality may vary based on sharing platform and playback environment; HDR10+ colour is only available on supported devices or platforms. From the camera settings, you can switch on/off the HDR and select whether you want it to be applied only when needed or always. You can edit the modes that appear above the shutter button and select various ways to snap a photo - by using the Volume keys or voice commands, by activating a floating shutter button or showing your palm as a shutter trigger.
The interface of the front camera is the same with the only difference being the available shooting modes, which in this case include Photo, Video and Live focus. As mentioned earlier, you can choose from shooting a cropped selfie or a wider one simply by switching between the two icons above the shooting modes. Photo editing is enabled by the Gallery app which offers object transformation options, adding effects and filters, texts and stickers, etc. You can also adjust image properties such as brightness, exposure, contrast, saturation, hue, white balance. You can also open and edit images with the Google Photos application.
