Display

Cubot P20 features a 6.18-inch in-cell IPS display and on paper, it looks like the same display but only bigger used on the X18 Plus. The specifications state the same data - 450 nits of typical brightness, 1300:1 static contrast ratio, coverage of 90% of the NTSC colour space reference. In-cell means that the touch sensor layer is implemented inside the cell of the liquid crystal display (LCD) thus making the unit thinner, more responsive, less power consuming and brighter. Ever since March this year, we have noticed on our review units with IPS displays that when we switch from one colour to a fully black screen, the handset needs about 10 seconds to show the black it is capable of showing. During these 10 seconds, the screen gets darker and darker. Hence, since then we've been making two measurements of the displays in order to give a more realistic picture of the static contrast, white and black luminance. The Single Frame measurements show the white and black luminance from a screen that shows 50% white and 50% black. The Separate Frames measurements show the white and black luminance received from a fully white and fully black screen.

When the white and black luminances are measured on a single frame that shows 50% white and 50% black, we get a maximum brightness of 526.71 cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 1650:1. The temperature of the white point is high - from 9600 K to 9900 K. Usually, the brightness is not so high when measured this way. Compared to the white luminance values of X18 Plus, the ones of Cubot P20 are significantly higher. The black luminance values are minimally higher, hence the contrast ratio is better compared to the X18 Plus. The temperature of the white point is slightly improved but still remains in the "cold" range.

When we measured the white and black luminance values on a fully white and a fully black display, we got higher white luminance values at all brightness levels. The maximum brightness in this occasion measures 524.783 cd/m2. This sample of the Cubot P20 demonstrates clearly why such a measurement is useful. On the latest IPS displays, the contrast ratio from two separate black and white frames exceeds 3000:1. In this case, it remains almost the same as the one from the single frame measurement. This hints that Cubot has used an older generation IPS panel. The absolute white and black luminance values are very close to the ones from the single frame measurement. The contrast ratio is 1600:1 and the temperature of the white point remains almost unchanged around 9800 K.

Cubot specifies that the P20 display covers 90% of the NTSC colour space reference. However, the CIE diagram clearly shows that despite the screen covers a wider-than 100% sRGB colour space, it does not reach 90% of the NTSC one. The display panel has a traditional vertical striped RGB subpixel arrangement.
