Display

The nubia Z60S Pro is adorned with a 6.78-inch 1.5К OLED display with a 1260 x 2800 px resolution and a pixel density of 453 ppi. It supports 10-bit color bit depth and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space. The peak brightness is specified as being 1200 nits with HDR10+ certification. The screen adopts 2160 Hz PWM dimming and DC dimming technology for enhanced eye protection. The refresh rate 120Hz with a 240Hz touch sampling rate and a 1000 Hz instantaneous touch sampling rate. The unit is SGS Low Blue Light and Flicker-free certified. The display uses the latest BOE Q9+ OLED material, which offers higher brightness, better color reproduction, and uniformity with color stability increased by 50%, compared to the Q9 material, released three years ago. OLED displays drive more power to each pixel with every decrease in the white area that has to be displayed on the screen. Hence, the Average Picture Level (APL) is used to assess better the brightness of OLED panels. When smartphone brands advertise their peak brightness levels, it is usually measured at 1% or 2% APL. This means that only 1% or 2% of the entire screen displays white and the other 98% is black. The APL graph above demonstrates the display brightness of our review unit at two different settings. The red line shows the brightness levels measured in intensive ambient light conditions with activated auto brightness. These are the prerequisites needed to reach peak brightness levels. The green line shows the brightness levels measured in ambient light conditions with inactivated auto brightness. We measure the brightness at ten APL values for a white area - from 10% to 100% of the display. Under ambient light conditions with auto brightness turned off, at 10% APL, the Z60S Pro we test shows a peak brightness of 680.387 nits. Under intensive light conditions with auto brightness turned on, at 10% APL, the display reaches a peak brightness of 830.653 nits. We suppose that at 1-2% APL, the display will hit 1000 nits of peak local brightness. At 50% APL (half of the screen is white) in intensive light conditions and auto-brightness on, the maximum brightness is 772.549 nits. At 100% APL (the entire screen displays white), the maximum brightness is 715.045 nits and that's the value we use in the chart below to compare the Z60S Pro's display with the displays of other smartphones.

The table above clearly demonstrates almost perfect brightness uniformity and a brightness level that's very consistent for an OLED display. It depicts nine values taken from nine different points on a fully white screen with a maximized brightness level, in normal light conditions, and turned off auto-brightness. The top and middle one-thirds have an average brightness of 597 nits, while the bottom one delivers an average brightness of 618 nits. The temperature of the white point for all points of reference is around the quite agreeable 7300 K level.

Below we publish our display measurements taken in normal light conditions with switched-off auto-brightness in the three available color modes. You can also check out the sub-pixel arrangement photo we took of the display. The Q9/Q9+ OLED family of BOE displays uses the company's self-developed blue diamond pixel layout, which fully optimizes the underlying logic architecture of the screen pixel design achieving richer colors and overall improved picture quality. The close-up photo of the sub-pixel structure is identical to that of Samsung's Diamond PenTile sub-pixel architecture, however, the red pixels on BOE's display panel have a brighter center that makes it look orange instead of red.

Standard Color Mode

In the Standard Color Mode, the CIE diagram shows that the display covers a much wider color space than 100% sRGB. This results in punchier colors at almost all levels (some blue and magenta hues are exact). The color temperature is consistent, gravitating around the 6700-6800 K level.

Soft Color Mode

The Soft Color Mode is for everyone looking for almost perfect 100% sRGB color space coverage with colors appearing as natural as possible. It does not cover accurately some of the magenta/pink and red hues. The temperature of the white point gravitates around the same 6700-6800 K range.

Colorful Mode

The Colorful Mode offers an even wider color space coverage than the Standard Color Mode. It almost reaches 100% Adobe RGB. Hence, colors will look even more punchier. The temperature of the white point is, logically, increased and gravitates in the 7300 K range.
