The company revealed that this new generation delivers significantly faster data speeds and improved power efficiency, making it well-suited for the next wave of mobile devices and on‑device AI applications.
The LPDDR6 standard represents the latest evolution of low‑power mobile DRAM, following earlier generations such as LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X. SK hynix completed the world’s first validation of its 1c LPDDR6 after previewing the technology at CES. The company expects to finish preparations for mass production in the first half of the year and begin supplying the memory in the second half, supporting global demand for high‑performance mobile computing.
Designed for smartphones, tablets, and other devices that rely on on‑device AI, the new LPDDR6 improves data processing speed by approximately 33 percent compared to LPDDR5X. Its base operating speed exceeds 10.7 Gbps, surpassing the maximum performance of previous generations. This increase in bandwidth allows devices to handle more complex AI tasks locally, reducing reliance on cloud processing and improving responsiveness.
Power efficiency has also been enhanced by more than 20 percent through the use of a sub‑channel architecture and DVFS technology. The sub‑channel design activates only the necessary data paths, while DVFS adjusts voltage and frequency depending on workload. This means devices can boost performance during demanding tasks such as gaming or AI inference, then scale down during lighter use to conserve battery life. For US consumers, this translates to longer battery performance in high‑end smartphones, while Chinese manufacturers can integrate the technology into a wide range of AI‑focused mobile devices.
SK hynix expects the new LPDDR6 to support smoother multitasking, faster AI processing, and improved energy efficiency across next‑generation mobile platforms. The company plans to expand its memory portfolio to meet the needs of global customers as AI‑driven features become standard across mobile ecosystems.
