Presented as the first flagship born from the companies’ upgraded strategic collaboration, the model embodies a co‑creation process that blends industrial design, imaging philosophy, and advanced engineering into a single product.
The latest Peitzphone draws heavily from the visual and tactile language of classic Leica M‑series cameras. Its back panel adopts a dual‑tone aesthetic, pairing textured leather with a matte surface to evoke the feel of a traditional rangefinder. The middle frame is knurled with precision and engraved with "LEICA CAMERA GERMANY", reinforcing the impression that this is a camera first and a smartphone second. For the first time on a Xiaomi device, the iconic Leica red dot sits on the body, signaling both authenticity and ambition.
The rear camera layout features two large circular modules - one in black, one in beige - each labeled "LEICA Vario‑Apo‑Summilux." The symmetrical arrangement stands out against a black background, emphasizing the device's photographic identity. One of the most distinctive elements is the Leica Camera Ring, a reinterpretation of traditional camera controls. It uses 20 high‑strength ball bearings to create a smooth, deliberate rotation that mimics the feel of adjusting focus on a physical lens. An internal optical displacement sensor detects movements as small as 0.03 mm, enabling precise manual focus adjustments. Despite this mechanical complexity, the device maintains IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings thanks to a dedicated sealing structure.
Xiaomi and Leica introduce Leica Essential mode, a feature designed to reproduce the visual character of two iconic Leica cameras:
- Leica M9 style - achieved through a RAW‑to‑RGB style‑transfer model trained on hundreds of thousands of real M9 photographs, capturing its distinctive color science.
- Leica M3 style - a digital recreation of the MONOPAN 50 film's tonality, grain, and contrast, offering black‑and‑white output that goes far beyond typical smartphone filters.
The Leica Leitzphone debuts the mobile industry’s first CAI Photo Authenticity Protection system. Each photo receives a digital signature generated by a dedicated security chip, ensuring that images can be verified as real and not AI‑generated—an increasingly relevant concern in the age of synthetic media.
In everything else, the new Leitzphone is identical to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Global. It is priced at EUR 1999 (16GB+1TB).
