Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Review

Display

The Redmi Note 9 is built around a 6.53-inch IPS display with an FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2340). It is protected by a 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and has a TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light Certification. The display covers 84% of the NTSC color space, supports HDR10, and offers 450 nits typical brightness as well as 1500:1 static contrast ratio. The display arrives with Reading mode 2.0, new Dark Mode which can be scheduled.

On the Redmi Note 9, the display settings under "Color scheme" offer five combinations between three variants for the color temperature (default, warm, and cool) and three color profiles (auto, saturated, standard). In this review, we measure the white and black luminance, contrast, and temperature of the white point of three of these profiles - the default color temperature coupled with each of the color variants - "Auto", "Saturated", "Standard". The "Auto" color profile can also be combined with "Warm" or "Cold" color temperature. Each combination is measured twice - the Single Frame one measures the white and black luminance of a screen that shows 50% white and 50% black; the Separate Frame one measures the white and black luminance of a fully white and fully black screen. The display of the Redmi Note 9 is moderately bright. The maximum brightness at 100% APL is measured with the default color temperature and the "Saturate" color profile on. Even with the default temperature and color profile on, the display offers excellent outdoor visibility under direct sunlight. It is also capable of very low brightness levels. The lowest brightness we could measure was 0.75 cd/m².

Default color temperature, Automatic colors

The "Default color temperature, Automatic colors" profile is the default one for the display of the Redmi Note 9. Under this profile, the maximum brightness of our review unit's screen is 365.29 cd/m². The contrast ratio is around 1254:1. The temperature of the white point is around 8500-8700 K. The CIE diagram unveils a color space coverage that is slightly wider than 100% sRGB.

The "Default color temperature, Saturated colors" display profile offers a slightly higher brightness and higher contrast - 406.09 cd/m² and 1391:1. The temperature of the white point is lower than the one of the previous profile - 7400 K. The CIE diagram of this profile is the same as the one of the previous profile with a color space coverage wider than 100% sRGB.

Finally, there's the "Default color temperature, Standard colors" profile. The maximum brightness here is 353.91 cd/m² and the contrast ratio is 1192:1. The temperature of the white point is the lowest compared to the other two profiles - 6600-6700 K. The CIE diagram shows a color space coverage that's a bit less than 100% sRGB.
